2022 is already making a splash in the beauty world and I don’t know about you but I love to see it. We all know that trends can change quickly in the industry. It’s always interesting to see how long they stick around and their lasting impact. Here are the 5 biggest makeup trends for 2022 according to the top makeup artists.

Soft Skin

Now that more and more people are getting into better skincare and skin health, there has been a downward turn in wearing heavy foundation. Many people are becoming more interested in lightweight products that are breathable, especially since masks aren’t going anywhere. We all know the saying, “Glowing skin is always in”. So to keep your skin soft and glowing during your makeup routine, use a liquid foundation or a tinted moisturizer. Pair it with a liquid highlighter and cream blushes that can blend into the skin easily and do not require a lot of manipulation. If you already have clear beautiful skin, take it up a notch by only concealing certain areas that are needed.

Negative Space Eyeliner

Your eyes are always a great way to be creative and grab people’s attention. For the longest people have used eyeliner as a way to achieve a bold look. Negative space eyeliner is the idea of outlining the eye with a bold color along the crease and leaving the space inside empty. Although this trend may not be for everyone, it’s definitely an attention grabber.

Fluffy brows

This trend has been budding for a while now and at first, I didn’t think it would last long. I was mistaken. More and more people are proudly rocking the fluffy brow look, given a much more natural appearance vs a very well-groomed esthetic. This technique is easily achieved by pushing the brow hair in an upward motion using a brow gel or brow soap and gently filling in the brow with hair-like strokes.

Diffused Lips

This trend is inspired by Asian culture and is ideal for the minimalist that would like a pop of color. To create the look, use soft neutral stains and concentrate pops of color in the center of the lips. The look gives a very soft natural effect that looks effortless.

Glazed Lips

On the contrary to diffused lips, lip gloss is making a comeback. We are seeing more people rock a very 90’s inspired look with lip liner and gloss. This time around the look includes other gloss pallets beside the staple clear coat that’s traditionally glazed over liner and lipsticks.

I cannot wait to see how these looks evolve this year, and what trends will follow. Which trend will you attempt to rock? Personally, Soft skin, fluffy brows, and glazed lips have been my go-to for a while. I’m glad to see them leave their mark this year in the beauty industry. What trends do you want to see flourish in 2022?

5 Common Winter Skincare Mistakes https://helenlavette.com/5-common-winter-skincare-mistakes/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 02:39:30 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=6274 5 Common Winter Skincare Mistakes Read More »

]]>

The winter months are upon us, and many people experience dry, flaky, and irritated skin during the winter. Some may think that simply layering on an extra coat of heavier moisturizer will do the trick, or that sunscreen isn’t necessary this time of year. Please think again! Here are five common skincare mistakes that people often make during the wintertime, and solutions to keep your skin at its best during the cold season this year.

Mistake #1: Not Adjusting Your Skincare Routine as Needed

Just as the seasons change, our skin changes constantly as well.  The slightest drop in the temperature will definitely impact your skin. It’s very important to use the right products to adapt to your skin’s changing needs. For instance, switching from a gel-based facial cleanser to a creamier cleanser. You might also apply a facial oil over your moisturizer to prevent moisture evaporation. Another suggestion is to treat your skin to a hydrating gel mask or, for drier types, a cream mask to give replace moisture that your skin may have lost.

Overall, if your skin is feeling tight, dry, or abnormal, then your routine isn’t working anymore and it is time to make some adjustments. Consult with a trusted esthetician or skincare professional to get a customized skincare routine.

Mistake #2: Not exfoliating or not exfoliating enough.

Exfoliation is key! This may sound counter-intuitive if your skin is getting drier, but trying to moisturize cells that are already dry and expired won’t get you very far. Exfoliate twice a week to dissolve away dry dead skin cells and reveal a smoother, healthier-looking texture.

Mistake #3: Over-Moisturizing With the Wrong Moisturizer and Relying Exclusively on Moisturizer to Hydrate the Face

When your skin is dry and flaky, applying an extra thick layer of moisturizer will not always solve the problem. Your skin is like a sponge. It will take what it needs and the rest will sit on top. Applying an extra layer of moisturizer will be wasteful. Your skin can only absorb so much.

First and foremost, using the right moisturizer for your skin typenis benefial. You want a moisturizer that has effective hydrating ingredients that actually repair the barrier and prevent loss of moisture. Some  ingredients for repairing dry, flaky, winter skin are safflower, soybean, sweet almond, carrot, borage, and sunflower oils as well as ceramides and linoleic acid. These ingredients will actually correct the lack of oil andhydration deep within your skin and make your skin moist, supple, and smooth.

Secondly, not relying exclusively on a moisturizer can be helpful. Since serums have a smaller molecular structure than moisturizers, they absorb deeper within the skin cells.Consider applying a serum underneath your mosturizing product, that have water-binding properties to deeply hydrate your skin.

Mistake #4: Not Sealing in Moisture Fast

You have a 60-second window after cleansing your skin to seal in moisture while your skin is damp. Otherwise, you risk severe dehydration. Since the air is so dry in the winter, it looks for water wherever it can get it and this means taking it from your skin at its most vulnerable time—after cleansing.

Here’s what happens. When you wash your face, your skin is damp. Water acts like a magnet and it will attract water out from the deepest layers of the skin and evaporate into the dry air. The result is even tighter, drier skin. To prevent this from happening, be sure to get your products on quickly. This will help keep your skin moist and hydrated.

Mistake #5: Skipping Sunscreen

UVA rays, the ones responsible for changing the DNA of your cells and leading to premature lines, wrinkles, and sagging, are close to the same strength from summer to winter. Additionally, they can penetrate through clouds and windows in your home, car, or office. This is why it’s essential to apply sunscreen every single day of the year if you are serious about protecting your skin from the damaging rays. Daylight is the #1 cause of premature skin aging and because of this, sunscreen is considered to be THE BEST anti-aging product you will ever use.

Developing a Skincare Routine https://helenlavette.com/developing-a-skincare-routine/ Mon, 02 Aug 2021 19:28:57 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=6011 Developing a Skincare Routine Read More »

Even though we ignore it sometimes, we are all aware of how important personal skincare is. Every person has their own opinion on how it should be done. There are people who believe they need to have their skincare done professionally, and others believe it should be handled in the privacy of their own home. There are also other categories of people who have unhealthy skincare habits. Some believe that skincare is an event that only happens once or twice per year, and others are so preoccupied that they never give their skin a rest. No matter where you stand in the skincare debate, we can all agree that skincare is best taken care of when you follow a routine.

Before you begin your skincare routine, you must pinpoint your personal skin type. Is your skin normal, sensitive, oily, or dry? Does your skin have a mixture of possibilities? Make sure to purchase skin care products that are right for your personal skin type. In order to determine exactly what you need, you may need to consult a professional first.

Now that you have your skincare products, here is a routine that works best for most people.
Step 1
The first step in any good personal skincare routine is cleansing. There are three ingredients that should be found in your cleanser, oil, water, and a surfactant. The oil and surfactant in the cleanser pull dirt from your pores. The water then flushes the pores and washes away the oil and surfactant. This will ensure that your skin is clean and clear of dirt and overbearing oils.

To make sure you have the right cleanser, you may have to try more than one. This will let you see how your skin feels using different products. Any cleanser you use should be free from soap, and soap-based ingredients. When you are washing your face, you should use Luke-warm water. This will prevent any damage to your skin. Make sure you do not over clean your face because it can cause damage to both your skin and your pores.

Step 2
The second step in any good skincare regimen is to exfoliate the skin. Your skin automatically follows its own natural schedule. It removes the dead skin cells and replaces them with healthy, new cells. When you exfoliate, you are helping the skin complete this process faster. Since dead skin cells cannot respond the way you need with skincare products, if you do not exfoliate they will absorb the products you are using. This keeps your skincare products from making it to the new skin cells, which is what you want to show.

For the best results, you should exfoliate right after you cleanse. You should make sure you understand how much you should exfoliate. For people with oily skin, exfoliation should happen two to three times per week. For people with normal, dry and sensitive skin, exfoliation should happen one to two times per week. If the weather is hot and humid, you may need to exfoliate more often.

Step 3
The third step in any good personal skincare routine is to moisturize. This is one of the most important steps in taking care of your skin. Even if you have oily skin, your skin will need a moisturizer to remain healthy. A moisturizer helps to seal healthy moisture in your skin. Your skin will also be able to attract moisture as it needs it. You should read the directions on your moisturizer to ensure you use the right amount. Moisturizer should always be applied when the skin is still damp after cleansing.

Step 4
The final step in a good skincare routine is to apply sunscreen. Many moisturizers already come with UV protection, but you should still apply sunscreen. This will provide extra protection and keep your skin healthy, even in the sun. When you are experimenting with skincare products to determine which one is best for you, you will also be able to determine how much of the product you choose will be needed. Always determine the exact amount you need to achieve a healthy feeling and healthy-looking skin. If you have a preexisting skin condition, you should visit a professional to treat it, and determine what skincare products are best for your skin type.

Getting Serious About Skin Care?!? https://helenlavette.com/getting-serious-skin-care/ Mon, 16 Nov 2020 20:17:53 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=5643 Getting Serious About Skin Care?!? Read More »

]]>

Are you looking for a serious skin care regimen?  Do you know what you hope to gain from it? A serious skin care regimen is all about developing and maintaining healthy, glowing skin for the rest of your life. As you age, your body’s natural skin elasticity becomes weaker. So your skin care routine will need to change as the needs of your skin change. This means that you need to constantly analyze and evaluate how your skin is changing, and what changes you need to make in your environment, and skin care products.

A serious skin care routine is also about personal awareness, technological advancements, and following research that is being brought to light on a regular basis. The composition of skin care products is also changing with time. These advancements allow us to make better choices, utilize natural, organic products that are better for our skin, and the removal of chemicals that are detrimental to our skin’s health.

Make sure that you know how to use each and every skin care product you have. Do not assume how it should be used, find out how the company achieved the results they advertise.

Know the basics of how general products should be used. For example, moisturizers should be applied while your skin is still damp after washing. It should be applied using upward strokes to ensure it is properly absorbed, and penetrates deep enough to make a difference.

You should always remove your makeup before you go to bed. You should always wash your face before applying a moisturizer, or putting on makeup. You should know how much of a skin care product you should use. By knowing how much to use, you can achieve the maximum benefit from its use.

If you wish to obtain healthy, vibrant skin, you should avoid coming into contact with harsh detergents that are sometimes found in skin care products. Always choose products that are gentle on skin, especially the sensitive skin on your face.

Avoid over-exfoliating, as it can cause significant damage to your skin, which will take time to repair. Never use low-quality products, or anything with a strong chemical base.

If you need help in determining which skin care products are right for your skin type, visit a dermatologist. If you want to have healthy, vibrant skin, you must take preventative, proactive measures to develop overall health.

As you use the skin care products recommended for your skin type, you will see dramatic changes in just a short period of time.

10 tips for healthy skin https://helenlavette.com/10-tips-for-healthy-skin/ Sat, 08 Aug 2020 02:24:41 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=5422

Healthy skin is really one of the most important ingredients for beauty enhancement. Here are 10 ways to keep your skin healthy.

  1. Knowing your skin type is one of the most important skincare tips. This is
important because not every skincare product suits everyone. In fact, most products will specify the type of skin they cater too.
  2. Drink a lot of water. This will not keep your skin moist but will help in the overall upkeep of your health (and in turn your skin). It might seem a bit awkward to some, however, this is an important part of skin health.
  3. Cleanse your skin regularly (1-2 times every day). A very effective skincare tip that helps in getting rid of the dirt and other harsh elements from your skin. Cleansing is especially important when you have been out of your house (and hence exposed to pollutants, dust, etc.). This also advocates the use of Luke warm water for cleansing (hot and cold water, both, cause damage to your skin)
  4. Be gentle, after all, it’s your skin. Don’t scrub/exfoliate too hard or too often. Similarly, don’t apply too much or too many skincare products. A must-to-follow skincare tip.
  5. Keep your skin moist at all times. This is one of the most important skin care tips. Don’t let your skin get dry. Dryness causes the outer layer of your skin to break, leading to a rough and unattractive appearance. Use moisturizers/ emollients. Moisturizers work best when applied while the skin is still damp.
  6. Avoid the use of soap on your face. Soap should only be used from below the neck. A small but important skincare tip.
  7. Use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful UV radiation. You can use day-time moisturizers that have sunscreen built into them. Use them even when it’s cloudy. UV radiations are known to cause skin cancer, so follow this skin care tip without fail.
  8. Exercise and good sleep are essential too, not just for skin care but for your health as a whole. Lack of sleep can lead to the formation of wrinkles below your eyes and lack of exercise can cause your skin to slack. Exercise and sleep also help in beating stress.
  9. Treat skin dilemmas with care. This skin care tip is about not ignoring any skin dilemmas. Consult a skincare professional (before you go on to use a skincare product before ending up harming your skin even more).
  10. Beat the stress. The harmful effects of stress are known to everyone, however, sometimes stating the obvious is essential too (and hence this skin care tip found its place here). Yes, stress harms skin too. So, take a break or indulge in a warm bubble bath or just get good sleep.

Ok so if you haven’t realized by now, skin is in!!! What most people would consider being gorgeous or having a flawless makeup application it would include having great skin. So exactly what does it mean to have great skin??? Skin that is hydrated, supple, has a good balance of oils and free of blemishes is what is deemed ideal skin. There are a number of factors that contribute to the overall glow that most people desire ranging from what you eat, to your facial routines at home. Here is a list of things you can do to achieve amazing skin!

Know your skin Type

Knowing your skin type is essential if you want to achieve great skin. Once you know your skin type, you can then begin to UNDESTAND your skin!!! Understanding your skin means that you will know what products work best for you and also what type of skincare regime you should use. There are 5 different categories for skin types:

1. Normal skin– feels vibrant, elastic, and supple. Someone that has normal skin will have skin that looks clean, smooth, and has a good circulation and healthy complexion. It is also the least problematic type.

2. Dry skin– can easily develop wrinkles and fine pores and will have a sallow tone. Dry skin is also very prone to aging and irritating.

3. Oily skin– looks greasy, is thick, coarse, and shiny, has enlarged pores, and tends to have acne breakouts.

4. Combination skin– combination skin will have traces of oil coming from your nose and forehead but will be clean in the areas surrounding your cheeks. Combination skin has patches of both dry and oily skin.

5. Sensitized Skin– Sensitive skin is usually very dry, tends to feel tight, and becomes inflamed and irritated easily. Sensitive skin also develops reddish and scaly areas, can be itchy and tingly and is prone to breaking into spots. It can be very frail and is considered the most problematic.

Develop a consistent skincare routine

To maintain healthy clear skin, you should have a skincare regime that you consistently use. Basic principles include choosing a facial wash that is ideal for your skin type, applying toner to put your pH level back on track, and using a good moisturizer that will keep your skin nourished and plump. Exfoliation is also ideal to help lift dead skin cells but shouldn’t be done daily. Over exfoliation can cause your skin to become sensitized and should be considered only a few times a week.

Protect your skin

Constant exposure to the sun without proper protection can accelerate the aging process. Sunscreen is used to protect you from sunburn, but it is also your best defense against signs of aging. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10am and 2pm. The result of sun exposure is skin damage: wrinkles, brown skin discolorations, dull-looking skin, and potentially even skin cancer. Even on a cloudy or hazy day, all the UVA and UVB rays are STILL present and can damage your skin. It is recommended that you use abroad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously. Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes prior to being in the sun and reapply every two hours or more often if needed.

Hydrate your skin

The best thing you can do for your skin is keep it hydrated. When skin is well-hydrated, it is more plump and resilient. In other words, the skin can perform its functions better if it is well hydrated. So, how do you hydrate your skin?  Drink plenty of water! Water is your skin’s best friend and will help it remain flexible and allow the protective barrier to remain intact. So keep your skin cells hydrated by drinking plenty of water. If you are someone that does not like drinking water here’s a tip: trying adding fruit to your water as a natural sweetener.

Stay tuned for more Skincare Saturdays with more information on specific routines for skin types, more information on sun exposure plus more!!!!

What’s the 411 on Lash Extensions? https://helenlavette.com/whats-the-411-on-lash-extensions/ Thu, 18 Jun 2020 19:38:41 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=5387 What’s the 411 on Lash Extensions? Read More »

]]>
Thinking about getting lashes? Moving into 2016, more and more people are getting into luscious lashes. However, there are many who still do not understand what Lash Extensions are. Lash extensions are imitation singular eyelashes that are dipped in medical grade glue and adhered to your individual lashes one by one. The three most common types of extensions are silk, mink, and synthetic. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin and eyes, one would be better suited over the other one.

Prior to your appointment- Many people have a stigma with Lash Extensions claiming they will damage your lashes or cause an infection. Do extensive research on the lash stylist you choose before setting your appointment. There are certain protocols and procedures that need to be followed. Most lash stylists will train with a reputable company. However, there are many people that offer lashes that are self-taught and may lack complete understanding of protocols and procedures for lash extensions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as, “What company did you train with?”, or “How do you sterilize your instruments?”

The day of your appointment, be sure to thoroughly cleanse your lash line. Lash Lice and bacteria do exist and can cause harm to your eye. When people have complications from lashes, it’s mostly due to improper hygiene.

The process- It starts with you lying flat on your back, while the lash stylist take a seat above your head. Your natural lashes are cleaned and primed, then a pad is placed right below the eyes and bottom lash lines. After you close your eyes, your lash tech will separate each lash with tweezers and glue a longer lash onto it. The whole process will take about one and a half hours to complete. Most people fall asleep during this time which bought forth the new beauty Hashtag #LashNap.

Aftercare- Lash extensions are not cheap. Protect your investment by following these after care instructions:

Don’t get your eyelashes wet for 24 hours after your procedure. This will give the glue an appropriate amount of time to cure. This means you should also avoid steam rooms / saunas and swimming during that period.

Do not use waterproof mascara on your eyelashes. A water soluble mascara or one designed specifically for eyelash extensions is fine to use, although you will probably find that you no longer require mascara.

Use cotton swabs to remove makeup by working gently around the eyelashes.

Do not use cleansers, makeup removers or moisturizers that contain oil or solvents on your eyes, as these will compromise the bonding agent used to adhere your eyelashes.

Do not rub your eyes, instead you should get used to patting your eyes gently which is in fact much better for the eyelashes and the sensitive skin around the eyes.

Never pull your eyelash extension off as it will pull out your natural eyelash. If you want them removed contact your professional lash stylist for eyelash removal services.

Do not perm or tint your eyelash extensions or use eyelash curlers on your eyelashes.

Book your next eyelash refill at 2 weeks or a maximum of 4-week intervals in order to maintain your optimum eyelash effect.

Having glowing skin is in! Each day more and more people are realizing that skin health is just as important as working out and dieting. With the rise of multi-level marketing products and social media, everyone is trying to figure out the best way to achieve optimal skin. Seeing a professional licensed skincare expert and receiving facials regularly will give you the ultimate glow that you’re looking for. Here’s ten reasons why you should receive a facial regularly.

1       healthier skin

Receiving facials regularly is a great start to having balanced skin. Facials help you obtain optimal skin by restoring your skin to a natural pH balance, minimize or rid your skin of blemishes, change the appearance of pores, and even out skin tones.

2       professional consultation

Seeing a skin care therapist, also known as an aesthetician, will allow you to collect professional guidance. An aesthetician will provide you with the best advice regarding your home care regimen, product choice and use of product all dependent upon your skin type and skincare needs.

3       increase circulation

Increasing blood circulation under the skin will allow optimal skin health. Suitable circulation helps facilitate the desquamation process, also known as the cell renewal process. The old cells rid themselves quicker, making it easier for the new healthy cells to come to the surface.

4       decrease waste

Everything we eat and touch gets absorbed by our skin in one way or another. Professional facials aide in the detoxification process, helping the skin to get rid of toxins, as well as lymph drainage through manual manipulation.

5       collagen production

Collagen is the building block of our skin and is what gives our skin that plump full effect. Regular facials aid in the production of collagen. Collagen production keeps the skin tight and reduces fine lines and wrinkles that come with age.

6       even out skin tone

By receiving facials regularly, young healthy skin cells are being promoted to the top. The old damaged cells collapse quicker, leaving your skin more vibrant and radiant each time. Eventually your skin tone will even out and the hyper-pigmented areas will lighten up.

7       slows the aging process

Receiving a professional facial regularly will help slow down the aging process. As we get older, our cells take longer to turn over or revitalize themselves. Manual manipulation of professional grade products aide the revitalization of skin cells by allowing penetration of nutrients and antioxidants.

8       deep pore cleansing

When it comes to skin health, think of it as the same way you do your gums and teeth. We brush our teeth daily, but we go see our dentist for a deep cleaning. Facials are the equivalent to getting your teeth cleaned by a dentist. Cleaning your face at home is only removing dirt from the surface. Professional facials allow the products to penetrate deep into the epidermis and remove dirt, oil and debris.

9       Deep exfoliation

A good facial will always include some form of exfoliation unless the barrier of the skin is severely compromised. A professional treatment will give you multiple options for exfoliation whether it’s a physical or chemical process. Most skincare professionals will choose the best process that will deliver optimal results according to your skincare needs.

10  Relaxation

The one benefit that everyone looks forward to is being able to relax during a facial. Receiving a professional facial put you in a state of tranquility and relaxation. Being able to destress after a long week is rewarding in itself.

9 Makeup Tips for Beginners https://helenlavette.com/9-makeup-tips-for-beginners/ Thu, 02 Apr 2020 23:28:33 +0000 https://helenlavette.com/?p=4816 9 Makeup Tips for Beginners Read More »

As a beginner to makeup, sometimes it can become overwhelming trying to figure out best practices. Here are 9 basic makeup tips to help you get started on our journey into the beautiful world of makeup.

  • Always start with a clean face.

Prep the skin by cleansing it and removing any dirt and old makeup. When it comes to make up, think of your face as a canvas. You want to paint the best picture possible by starting with a fresh canvas.

  •  Moisturize your skin.

Apply some moisturizer to your face based on your skin type. Moisturizer will moisten the skin, preparing it to receive the foundation better. Be sure to allow the moisturizer to completely dry before moving forward.

  • Apply a primer.

Choose and apply a primer based on your skin type. Primer is used to seal off your pores and minimize shine, helping the foundation and makeup last throughout the day.

  • Conceal.

Use a concealer the same shade of your skin tone to conceal blemishes, hyperpigmentation, and under eye circles. Be sure to blend the concealer well into your skin, then brush a small amount of setting powder over the concealed areas. Use color correction concealer for imperfections that may need to be concealed more, then add foundation on top.

  • Apply foundation.

Choose a foundation to apply based on shade, coverage and finish. The shade of your foundation should match your skin tone. The foundation should also depend on whether or not you prefer full, medium or sheer coverage. The finish should be based on your skin type. Matte finish works best for people with oily skin. A Dewey finish is suitable for someone with drier skin, while a Satin finish is suitable for all skin types.

  • Eye shadow and liner

Apply your eye shadow and eye liner based on your desired look and eye shape. Be careful of fallout, and remember less is more. You can always build on top of a look, so starting simple is ideal until you get use to applying and working with different shadows.

*Extra Tip- applying water to a brush then dipping it in an eyeshadow will intensify it.*

  • Blush

Apply a shade of blush in the hallows of your cheek. Choose a blush shade that goes well with your eye shadow and the undertones of your skin.

  • Lip stick and Liner

Just like your blush, chose a lipstick that goes well with your eye shadow and the undertones of your skin. Apply a lip liner first to decrease the chance of the lipstick running or smudging around your lips.

  • Set your look.

Apply a setting powder to help your makeup stay in place throughout the day. You can also apply a finishing spray to help set your look.

The skin is a very complex organ. Our skin is the LARGEST organ in the body and serves as a barrier for protection against various elements.  Skin layers, nerves, cellular functions, hair follicles, and glands all work together to regulate and protect the body. Our skin contains thousands of tiny pores and hair follicles and is broken up into 3 different layers; the epidermis or top layer, dermis, and subcutaneous layer. Each of these layers performs important roles in keeping our body healthy. Listed below are 6 incredible reasons why you should love the skin you’re in.

  1. Sensation: Did you now that touch is one of the first senses to develop? The skin contains millions of nerve endings that transport stimuli. These nerve endings allow us to detect sensation such as heat, cold, pain and pressure. Nerve fibers in our skin help detect when we are touched and the sensations are what causes us to feel, react, and move.
  • Heat Regulation: On average, our body’s internal temperature is about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Our skin help to maintain homeostasis within the body. In other words, our skin help to regulate the inside of the body when the temperature around us is warmer or cooler than the body. The body can maintain thermoregulation through evaporation, perspiration, radiation, and insulation. When we sweet, the glands release perspiration to keep us from overheating then we cool ourselves through the evaporation on the skin’s surface. When we are cold, our body will constrict the blood vessels and decrease the flow of blood, causing us to shiver, which is an automatic response to cold and a way to warm the body.
  • Absorption: Our skin absorbs ingredients, water and oxygen. All of which are necessary for the overall health of our skin. The skin’s barrier is selective and absorption is limited. However, some ingredients can penetrate the skin if the molecular sizes are small enough. Absorption of selective products help keep our skin moisturized, nourished, and protected.
  • Protection: Our skin is thin but yet strong and protects us from outside elements and microorganisms. There are several ways the skin protect the body from injury and invasion. For instance, our skin has an average pH of 5.5. Maintaining pH in the skin is important to help protect against pathogens and aide in regulating enzymatic functions. Our skin has a natural barrier function that fight against irritation and water loss. Damage to our barrier layer is what causes us to have skin problems such as sensitivities, aging, and dehydration.
  • Excretion: Our skin contain glands that help rid the body of built up toxins and waste. These glands excrete unwanted water, salt and chemicals through the pores. Helping to eliminate waste in the body helps the body’s overall function.
  • Secretion: Our skin contains the sebaceous gland, also known as the oil gland. The oils produced help keep the skin soft and protected from outside elements. As oil coats the surface of the skin, the evaporation of water slows down, which keeps your skin from becoming dehydrated.
